Renowned ghazal singer Jagjit Singh passed away at 8 am in Lilavati Hospital on Monday morning (October 10).
The 70 year old singer was admitted to the hospital on September 23 after he suffered a brain haemorrhage. He had undergone dual life saving surgeries and was on life support system since. His health deteriorated and he succumbed to his illness. He is survived by his wife Chitra Singh. Their only son Vivek Singh had died in a road accident in 1990.
“The Ghazal King” has sung in several languages including Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi and Nepali. He and his wife, Chitra Singh, were a successful ghazal duo act in the ’70s and ’80s.
Jagjit Singh entered the music circuit when the field was dominated by Pakistani ghazal singers. However, along with performances, Jagjit also contributed to film music. A recipient of Padma Bhushan award, he was also among the first to come up with music videos for his songs.
