Ajay Devgn to remake Mani Ratnam's Gharshana with Rohit Shetty

After tasting success with Singam, which was a remake of a popular Tamil hit, Ajay Devgn has acquired the remake rights of Mani Ratnam's Gharshana from VG Entertainments, which owned the rights.  The film will be directed by Rohit Shetty, who directed Singam.
This is yet another addition to the long and unending list of South Indian films being borrowed by Bollywood.  It is not surprising, given that recent remakes like Bodyguard have clocked exciting tallies at the box office.
There is a growing craze for the South Indian scripts with even superstars like Salman and Aamir evincing interest in these films.
However, Ajay Devgn's interest in Gharshana is something different.  Unlike the aforementioned movies, this movie was released decades ago.  Thus, it will be interesting to see how the writers will redesign it to make it look modern.  In the past, when P Vasu selected a 1990s Malayalam film, no body was sure as to what he was up to.  When Chandramukhi released in 2005 and scorched the box office, it made history.

'Who says I won't work with Salman, SRK or Ajay again?'

Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali on his alleged friends-turned-foes, being a happy person, his films and more

How is a semi-recluse like you coping with the demands of aggressive promotion for your forthcoming venture?
It's a kind of an upheaval.

Today, marketing and promotion of a movie are as important as making it. I did just two interviews before the release of Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam.

Today, I'm doing at least 10 a day. I'm working hard to reach out to more people, but without any controversies or negativity.

Do you think you've changed with time?
People had this image of me being a dark brooding filmmaker because of the films I've made. On the contrary, I have always been a fun-loving and happy person. Today thanks to the aggressive promotions, I'm reaching out to people more than I used to, and I must admit I'm enjoying it. I'm learning to be more chilled out though.

My Friend Pinto and Rowdy Rathore are a sharp contrast to the kind of cinema you've directed so far...
I want to produce the kind of films I don't myself make because maybe I don't have the attitude to direct them. If I produce my kind of cinema, there would be a clash of interest because it's my forte.

Reportedly, not Prateik, but Ranbir Kapoor was the first choice for My Friend Pinto...
Ranbir is the kind of actor I'd consider for every film, like Madhuri Dixit. But I didn't offer this one to Ranbir. My Friend Pinto was always for Prateik.

Given the mixed reviews he got for Aarakshan, weren't you worried whether he could pull this off?
The way Prateik behaves and responds, the role is completely for him. He's not corrupt. He hasn't lost his mind or become egoistical. We needed someone without any image or that excess baggage.

Prateik in My Friend Pinto

You've signed Farah Khan opposite Boman Irani in your sister Bela's directorial debut. Since the clash with her Om Shanti Om, was it tough burying differences?
A good friendship never goes sour. It shouldn't take more than a minute to clear the misunderstanding and restart from where it was left off. Farah and I share an intense friendship. If there's any misunderstanding with someone, I'll call the person. If they come around, good. If they don't, it's okay.

What about your equation with Salman Khan and Ajay Devgn? You've had clashes with both...
I've no problems with Ajay; that was with his film's director. I had a blast working with Ajay in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. Same goes with Salman. He's in his nice happy successful space. Sometimes you get lost. But it's not that we'll never talk or work
together again.

So when do we see you working with them or Shah Rukh Khan again?
I got along very well with all my actors.  When you care for your actors and friends, you share a chemistry. They may not be working with me today, but there's no unhappiness. After a gap of time, I can revisit and rediscover them as actors again. This script is God. If it demands a particular actor, you'll have to go to him/her whether the actor says yes or no.

Lastly, which of these actors will make it to your dream movie Bajirao Mastani?
When I decide to make it, I'll talk about it. I've three scripts ready, but in about a month I should be able to make up my mind on which I'll direct next.

Ajay Devgn-Sanjay Dutt shake a leg

Sanjay Dutt Productions and Rupali Aum Entertainment's upcoming comic film " Rascals" has been garnering positive responses when it comes to the movie's songs. The music of this film was being keenly anticipated right since the shooting days.

The USP of all these songs is the extremely catchy dance moves of Sanjay Dutt and Ajay Devgn. Be it "Tik Tuk", where you see them in a 'dance clash' of sorts where each one is trying to outdo the other to impress the girl, or be it the sexy "Shake It Saiyaan" with Lisa Haydon! Music directors Vishal and Shekhar are happy with the compliments they've received for the songs.

Director David Dhawan says the songs are especially popular among the youth The film's been shot in Bangkok and Mumbai. Says Dhawan, "We've shot the film in many of the beautiful locales of Bangkok and Pattaya. The two conmen, played by Ajay and Sanju, meet on a plane to Bangkok so we shot a majority of the film there. I shot at the hotels and beach resorts in Pattaya. We also put up a small set of a police station and bank in Thailand." The movie which is produced by Sanjay Dutt, Sanjay Ahluwalia and Vinay Choksey and directed by David Dhawan is slated for a Dusshera release on October 6.

T-town: The perfect launchpad for aspiring actors

Kajal
Kajal
Variety is the spice of Tollywood. Just last year, around 30 to 40 new actresses were launched in mana industry. Yes, you heard it right.

And the figures don't come as a surprise because the Telugu film industry produces over 150 films annually, surpassing even Bollywood. With so much happening here, filmmakers are constantly scouring for fresh faces. And actresses too, from across the country and even abroad, are keen to get into Telugu films. Even NRIs like Richa Gangopadhyay, Nikesha Patel, Priya Anand and Vimal Raman have turned to the industry to fulfill their filmi aspirations.

In fact, Tollywood is the most favored industry when it comes to actresses looking out for avenues to launch their film career with their ultimate destination, of course, being Bollywood. From Katrina Kaif, Shriya and Genelia D'souza to the latest entrants in Bollywood - Ileana and Kajal - all have established their careers down South first. Ask any model or a pageant winner and she will tell you that she's interested in acting in the South first.

There are many reasons that attract people to the Telugu film industry. The first is money, and the second is they look at it as a preparatory for Bollyowood. Actresses like Asin (" Ghajini", "London Dreams") and Trisha ("Khatta Meetta") who worked in several Telugu films, kick started the trend of Southern girls gravitating to B-town. That was followed by Kajal Aggarwal who made her debut with Teja's " Lakshmi Kalyanam" and within a short span she joined the big league in B-town after debuting in "Singham" opposite Ajay Devgn.

Close on her heels, Tapsee, a model from Delhi, made her debut with Telugu film "Jhummandi Nadam", went on to rock Kollywood and is now set for Bollywood with a David Dhawan film. Even the latest entrant, Kollywood import Samantha, who is currently ruling the roost in Tollywood, is doing a Telugu-Tamil-Hindi trilingual with Gautam Menon. Actresses waiting in the wings to take off to the Hindi film industry include Hansika and Tamannah.

Here are just a few examples that show how Tollywood has been and will always be a special platform for many actresses.

Katrina Kaif: This porcelain beauty became a huge star down South with her debut in Telugu with " Malleswari" opposite Venkatesh, before going on to become a bigwig in the Hindi film fraternity.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan: This Former Miss World made a special appearance in the Telugu film "Akasa Veedhilo"

Sushmita Sen: The Former Miss Universe acted opposite mana Nagarjuna in a bi-lingual film "Rakshakudu"

Priyanka Chopra: Not many people know that this former Miss World too made her debut in a Telugu film "Apuroopam"

Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgan: Bollywood Action Heroes

We can safely say that Salman Khan is solely responsible for the comeback of the action star in Bollywood now-a-days. With his skull-crushing punches and concrete-powdering kicks, the audiences just can’t have enough of the textbook action hero getting back at the bad guys. Koimoi.com celebrates the dishoom dishoom heroes of Bollywood:

Salman Khan

Be it Garv, Wanted, Dabangg or Bodyguard, Salman Khan won’t think twice before ripping off his shirt and showing his toned physique. And not just show off, he’ll beat the villains with a water hose, concrete slab and whatever he can lay his hands on! Wonder whether we’ll get the dose of his action in Ek Tha Tiger

Akshay Kumar

Bollywood’s favourite stuntman can show the bad guys their place with a few martial arts moves. Akshay Kumar may not have the much-coveted multiple-pack-abs, but he’s always top-of-mind among the knuckle-cracking stars of Bollywood. After all, for years, he played the khiladi over and over again…

Ajay Devgan

The dhai kilo ka haath will always be remembered for uprooting a hand-pump and sending an army whimpering back to its camp. Sunny Deol is still the baap of action as Yamla Pagla Deewana showed us. Hopefully, we will see him step on the gas in Ghayal Returns.

Sanju baba may not rank high when it comes to physique, but he can definitely show the villains their place. And looking at the promos of Agneepath, we’re sure he’s going to give us a pretty good action show with Hrithik Roshan.

Six Movies Lined Up for Release on 30th September. For which one you are Ready - Force, Hum Tum Shabana, Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster or Rest Releases?

This week six more movies are going to release simultaneously. Is it a wise decision to release so many films simultaneously? Out of this six movies at least three movies have a good pre-buzz and that are Force, Hum Tum Shabana and Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster. Rest three movies are respectively Tere Mere Phere, Na Jaane Kabse.. and  Chargesheet.  Moreover these six movies have to fight for screen space with Mausam, Mere Brother Ki Dulhan and Bodyguard. Now the question is will audience is ready to pay bucks for so many films or even to pay for one film? Lets give little details of three of the movies below that are carrying buzz. Others will have to depend on content and Word of mouth.

1. Force - Force is a remake of South HIT Kaakha Kaakha. Force stars John Abraham as Yashvardhan and Genelia Dsouza as Maya. Yashvardhan (John Abraham) is a hard-headed senior narcotics officer who doesn't play by the book but always ensures that justice is served. He believes that the only way to eradicate crime is to give criminals the bullet - not hand cuffs. In the midst of his most dangerous and significant operation to crack down on India's drug cartels, Yashvardhan encounters a ruthless enemy who will stop at nothing until he gets his revenge for the damage done to his business by the narcotics team. He also meets the free-spirited Maya (Genelia), whose love pushes him to make a choice between the life he already knows and the life he could have with her. Yashvardhan's decision to let happiness and normalcy into his life changes his life forever.

2. Hum Tum Shabana - Hum Tum Shabana stars Tusshar Kapoor, Shreyas Talpade and Minissha Lamba. It is a funcon with a triangular love story. There is nothing simple about this madcap story, especially when their rivalry to woo her lands them into a crazy contest of epic proportions. Soon enough, this battle to woo the girl turns into a desperate battle to lose the girl! With a comic guru like Sagar Ballary at the helm, a super-talented comedic cast and a crackling music score, this is one ride you're just not going to want to miss. Join us as we take you on the mother of all rollercoaster rides in a comical extravaganza that'll knock your socks off. This season, get ready for fultoo romance, crazy bhais, rapchik items and dhamaal fun.

3. Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster - Starcast - Jimmy Sheirgill, Mahie Gill and Randeep Hooda. It is modern interpretation of Shahib Biwi aur Ghulam. Based in a small town in the Northern part of India, Sahib Biwi Aur Gangster is a story packed with intrigue betrayal and ambition between a beautiful Begum, her Nawab husband and an ambitious young boy.

Salman Khan’s Bodyguard Is 2nd Highest Bollywood Grosser!

In its 3rd week, Bodyguard netted Rs. 9 crore to take its 3-week total to Rs. 145 crore. Its business has crossed that of Salman Khan starrer Dabangg, making it the second highest all-time grosser in India (next only to 3 Idiots)!
Bol, which released with Bodyguard, managed to survive at some centres in 3rd week at low collections.
Of the releases on September 16, Rivaaz has bombed. The film has had to be discontinued after a week’s run at most of the cinemas. Rajshri’s experiment of releasing Jaana Pehchana in just one cinema in India last week failed – like the film itself. The Ankhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se sequel managed to collect less than 20% of the houseful capacity in its first week. Burf Ka Toofan (dubbed) could not do much at the ticket windows in its first week.

Why Mausam May Not Cover Its Cost

The Mausam Economics (Mausam Movie Stills)

There’s a misconception in the industry that Mausam has cost Rs. 60 crore to make, promote and release. The fact, however, is that the investment of Sheetal Talwar and Eros International in the film is not more than Rs. 42-45 crore. Given this, the first day’s opening figures weren’t as bad as the trade was making it out to be. Actually, it is not the entire trade but a few loud-mouthed people in the industry who were going on and on about how the film had opened to disastrous houses. Probably, they were unaware of both, the first day’s collections and the total cost of Mausam.

Mausam Economics

The cost of Mausam, as mentioned, is Rs. 42-45 crore without counting Shahid Kapoor’s remuneration for the film. Satellite rights have fetched around Rs. 12-13 crore and the music rights must have sold for around Rs. 5 crore. Thus, Pankaj Kapoor’s film requires at least Rs. 25-27 crore from Indian and overseas theatrical business to break even. As Mausam has raked in Rs. 22 crore (all-India net collection) over the first weekend, the weekend business (distributors share) is only Rs. 11 crore. Therefore, it may not cover cost. And the cost reportedly does not include Shahid’s remuneration as he charged nominal fee only. If we include that, loss will be bigger.

Mausam Makes Rs. 23 Cr In First Weekend

Update: In light of additional reports received, the Sunday collections of Mausam are revised to Rs. 8-8.50 crore. Therefore, the three day total is now Rs. 22-22.5 crore (approx. all-India collections).
Mausam made Rs. 23 crore (approx. all-India net collections) on its first weekend at the box-office. The Shahid Kapoor-Sonam Kapoor starrer made Rs. 7.50 crore (September 23). On Saturday, the film made Rs. 6.50 crore. The collections picked up on Sunday, when the film made Rs. 9 crore.
Mausam had opened to good houses at places, average houses at other places and dull at some centres. Multiplexes welcomed the Shahid Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor starrer with far more warmth than the single screen cinemas.

Agneepath’s Tezz challenge at the BO

A still from Agneepath
A still from Agneepath
It seems that apart from investing in the action-thriller Tezz, the film's producers have spent much of their time negotiating with other filmmakers for the coveted Republic Day release.

On September 7, 2011 Mumbai Mirror, had reported that director Priyadarshan and producer Ratan Jain were trying to convince the producers of Reema Kagti's untitled film to re-schedule the release of the Aamir Khan starrer. And just when the filmmakers of the Ajay Devgn starrer Tezz managed to avert a box-office clash with Aamir, they have another filmmaker to contend with.

A source informed that now Karan Johar wants to release his Hrithik Roshan starrer Agneepath on January 26. Initially, the film was supposed to release on January 13.

Interestingly, the industry has been abuzz with speculations that Dibakar Banerjee is also vying for the same release date for his film Shanghai. Reportedly, Jain has already called Johar and the two have decided to meet to discuss how to work around this clash.

"One of them needs to bend. It would be ridiculous if both Tezz and Agneepath release on the same date. In such a scenario, they would definitely cut into each other's business," explained the source.

While Jain and Johar have decided to work it out, many in the industry are questioning KJo's reasons for postponing Agneepath's release.

The source added, "One fails to understand why Karan decided to push Agneepath by a fortnight. Even though January 26 is a National holiday, it is not a commercially wise decision to have all three films release on the same day."

When contacted, Jain confirmed that he will be meeting Johar soon to discuss a way out of the box-office clash. When asked if he would reschedule the release of Tezz if Johar was adamant to release Agneepath on January 26, the producer said, "Woh dekha jayega.

I haven't thought so far. But if we hit the theatres on the same day, both the films would definitely incur some loss."

Ajay Devgn's helping Sanjay Dutt for South deals?

ajay_devgn
Ajay Devgn
News has it that actor Sanjay Dutt is more than happy having bought the copyrights of the Telugu film Dhee, which he intends to remake in Hindi.

Having roped in his Rascals co-producers and having signed on Indra Kumar to direct this Romcom, we also hear that it is after the successful run of 'Singham' at the box office, that Dutt decided to take the step.

If unit sources are to be believed, it's during the shooting of 'Rascals' that a discussion between Ajay and Sanjay took place. The discussion was about the immense business scope that remakes have without any compromise on the product.

Ajay Devgn's Singham too was a South remake. Salman Khan began the South remake trend with Wanted. Rajinikanth's Endhiran was released in Hindi as well as Robot. Though it's basically action films that seem to make it big, Dutt is more than convinced of the romantic comedy Dhee, which proved its mettle down South.

We also hear that it was Ajay Devgn who helped Sanju with the initial South meetings and put him on to the right people.

Besides Dutt, two more lead actors are to be cast. What are the chances that Sanjay's Rascals-co-star Ajay Devgn will be roped in to this one as well? Quite a probability, we say. Let's wait and watch.

Soundtrack Release Postponed To October 7

The release of Soundtrack, scheduled to release on September 30, has been postponed by one week as lead actress Soha Ali Khan’s father, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, is critically ill. Soundtrack, which also stars Rajeev Khandelwal and Mrinalini Sharma, will now release on October 7, 2011.
One other reason being cited for the postponement is the slew of films releasing on October 30. Even after the postponement of Soundtrack, as many as 6 films are releasing next Friday (September 30). They include Chargesheet, Force, Hum Tum Shabana, Na Jaane Kabse.., Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster and Tere Mere Phere.
Starring Rajeev Khandelwal, Mrinalini Sharma and Soha Ali Khan, Soundtrack is the edgy, modern day portrayal of a prolific musician and DJ. It traces his alcohol, drug and sex fuelled meteoric rise, as he battles his internal demons and a damaging handicap that slowly causes him to lose his hearing.

Ajay pulls a prank on his fan along with Abhishek

view AJAY DEVGN PULLS A PRANK ON HIS FAN picture gallery
Ajay Devgn's birthday, his movie releases, the success of his films are all auspicious occasions in this person's life. He's even got a SINGHAM tattoo on his chest and worships Ajay Devgan. Who could this possibly be? Brace yourselves, for this is Nikhil Katecha, one of Ajay's biggest fans!

And before you start reading into the headline, let's get one thing straight! Now, it so happened that our Jaipur based, unsuspecting fan was taken to the sets of Ajay's latest film. The thought of meeting Ajay in person got him so excited that all he ever did was ask where Ajay was. He didn't spare even the director of the film, Rohit Shetty. After being questioned on Ajay's whereabouts for about 100 times, the otherwise cool Rohit lost his temper and walked out on him. So upset was Nikhil, that he nearly burst into tears. How could he have angered such a big filmmaker? But, little did he know that the biggest surprises of his life awaited him?

CHECK OUT: SINGHAM crosses Rs 100 crores net!

On turning around, Nikhil found Ajay standing right in front of him! Ajay then revealed to him that Rohit being angry was just a part of a prank. And as if that wasn't enough, Abhishek Bachchan was also a part of the prank. He kept switching off the cameras and even pretended to bring the shoot to a grinding halt!

Besides this, Ajay even charted a day out for him, a day that saw him meet the likes of Kumar Manghat Pathak, Sameer Arya (Ajay's best friend) and Hakim Aalim!

Mausam Opening Friday is Collection is 7 crore nett. Good Opening. Saturday Report is also Good.

Mausam has collected a very good 7 crore nett all India on its opening Friday as per early estimate. Film picked up immensely on Friday evening and collected well. Mausam is easily going to be Shahid Kapoor best grosser ever in Bollywood.

Ajay's fan gets inked with 'Singham' tattoo

Some fans go overboard with their love for Bollywood stars and Nikhil Kateja is one of them. The 23-year-old from Jaipur got himself inked with the same tattoo that actor Ajay Devgn sported in his latest blockbuster 'Singham'.

In the upcoming episode of UTV Stars' 'Live My Life', Kateja will be seen living the life of his idol, Ajay, for a day.

As the actor was busy shooting for 'Bol Bachchan' when Kateja got the chance to meet him, the young boy was taken to meet Hakim Aalim, Ajay's friend and a popular tattoo artist.

Kateja, who has a family business, insisted on getting a tattoo - a king size 'Singham' tattoo, on his chest, and Aalim obliged, according to a source. He was so excited about his newly-acquired tattoo that he unbuttoned his shirt to show it off to Bollywood star Abhishek Bachchan, who was with Ajay on the sets of 'Bol Bachchan'.

The episode will be aired Sunday.

Fox STAR Studios to co-produce Ajay Devgn's next

Fox STAR Studios has announced that it will co-produce Ajay Devgn-starrer rustic comedy 'Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola', which will be directed by Vishal Bhardwaj.

Set in Haryana, the film will be co-produced by Fox STAR Studios along with Vishal Bhardwaj Pictures, Ajay Devgn Films and Wide Frame Pictures.

'When Vishal told me that he was looking at creating a comedy and he narrated the script, I was immediately excited and became a part of the project' said Ajay in a statement.

Its star cast will also have Anushka Sharma playing the lead characters and national award-winning filmmaker Bhardwaj will also compose the music for the movie.

'I have had the idea for this comedy in my head for a long time, almost eight years. It's a totally new genre and completely different from what I have done in my previous seven films.

'I was also missing working with Ajay for some time. He is such a great actor and an even greater human being. I am so much in sync him that the wait to be on the set is killing. As for Anushka, I would say that she is a ball of energy, the harder you throw her the higher she will go. Looking forward to shooting with her,' said Bhardwaj.

Fox STAR Studios produced and distributed films like 'My Name Is Khan', 'Khichdi: The Movie','Stanley Ka Dabba', 'Dum Maro Dum' and their next is the John Abraham-starrer 'Force'.

Vijay Singh, CEO of Fox Star Studios, said: 'We believe the nationwide appeal of this hilariously rustic comedy, the coming together of great talent and a title which raises eyebrows will make this an event film for audiences in 2012.'

Movie Review “Mausam”: A Love Story That Touches The Heart

Cast: Shahid Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor, Supriya Pathak, Anupam Kher and Aditi Sharma
Writer-Director: Pankaj Kapoor
Rating: ****
There is an absolutely devastating moment of pure drama in this eagerly-awaited far-from-disappointing romance where Shahid Kapoor, playing one of the most deliciously challenging roles of his career, espies from a train the lost love of his life, Sonam Kapoor, standing forlorn in the snow with luggage, like Meryl Streep in “The French Lieutenant’s Woman” or Manisha Koirala in “Dil Se”, waiting for god knows what! The next train? Love? Death? Or the next life?
It’s a moment that defines “Mausam”, a film that has some serious flaws, but finally holds together as a work of renaissance art, more remarkable, in parts outstanding, for what it attempts rather than what it finally achieves.
Pankaj Kapoor takes the Muslim-Hindu love story between a Kashmiri refugee girl and a Punjabi boy through an arching sweep of history. Every historical trauma that has defined and defiled India and Indians in the last 30 years props up as a vital image to underline the love story.
And what “Mausam” finally says is, love becomes impossible in a civilization that chooses to define itself by violence rather than peace. Gandhi? He could be just a spectre that never existed in a world where two young people cannot come together in a clasp of love for the fear of falling into a terror trap.
We have award-worthy performances in “Mausam” by the hero who happens to be the director’s son. But that is just a karmic coincidence, like much of what transpires between the lovers in “Mausam”.
The film goes from one phase in the couple’s life to another, not quite smoothly but not strenuously either. The transitions in their estrangement are mapped out in some finely-written scenes where the couple’s smothered affections for one another are manifested in moments of sublime beauty.
The ever-brilliant cinematographer Binod Pradhan captures the couple against breathtaking backdrops in rural Punjab and Scotland.
“Mausam” is one of the best-looking films in recent times. The transitions in time and topography are brought about with a fair degree of inner conviction and outer resplendence.
The synthesis of the lovers’ inner and outer world is not always stress-free. The couple’s inability to come together through various tragic and traumatic historical conflicts is depicted in scenes that range from the rivetting to the mundane.
Visually the film is a feast.
The film’s strong sense of purpose and its love-defining affiliation to socio-cultural incidents leave little space for the incidental characters (of whom there are many) to grow in the plot. That, in a way, is the need of the plot. But you do crave to see more of the lives around the couple and how these lives and the relationships qualify the love story at the film’s centre. You want to see the long-lasting friendship between Aayaat’s Muslim father (Kamalnain Chopra) and the Kashmir Pundit (Anupam Kher).
And there is a plenty of quality of that sublime stillness in the storytelling - the film’s extraneous correctness hides much of the film’s intrinsic inconsistencies. Then there is Shahid, standing tall with a performance that puts him right up there among the finest contemporary actors.
Shahid takes us through the film’s and his character’s romantic odyssey, inconsistencies and all. Forget Tom Cruise. In the Airforce uniform he reminds us of Rajesh Khanna in “Aradhana”. And that’s the highest compliment any contemporary star can be paid.
The director tries hard to merge Sonam in the resplendent ambience. Her performance has enchanting echoes of Kareena Kapoor in “Refugee”. The camera gives her no room to complain. But in the intensely romantic moments, she looks lost rather than lovelorn.
It’s the other girl, the spirited Punjabi kudi Rajjo, in Shahid’s life played by Aditi Sharma, who fills up the small space provided to her character.

Katrina Kaif to raise oomph in ‘Dhoom: 3′

The hunt for a leading lady for “Dhoom: 3 is over! Katrina Kaif will sizzle in the third installment of the action-adventure series, which features Aamir Khan as the anti-hero.

Yash Raj Films (YRF) had been on the lookout for a fresh face for the role, which was essayed by Esha Deol and Aishwarya Rai, in “Dhoom” and “Dhoom:2, respectively.

“After almost a year of searching for a new face for ‘Dhoom: 3, we were still unable to find the perfect debutante to play the lead role. We even reached out to international talent but were still unable to find someone who stood out,” said director Vijay Krishna Acharya aka Victor.
The choice was made jointly by Victor and producer Aditya Chopra.
“Once we decided to go with a known face and not pursue the newcomer route, Katrina was the obvious choice for all of us,” Victor said in a YRF press statement Friday.
Katrina has been riding high on the success of films like “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara” and another YRF venture “Mere Brother Ki Dulhan” earlier this year.

Ajay Devgn upcoming movie sold for 80 crs.

S S Rajamouli’s Maryada Ramanna is going to be remade in Hindi with Ajay Devgan and Sonakshi Sinha reprising the roles of Sunil and Saloni respectively. Ashwni Dhir is going to direct the film and the buzz is that several changes are being made in the script to suit the sensibilities of the Hindi audience.

Now, we hear that the film has been titled as S.O.S – Son of Sardar. And the most surprising thing is, the film has already been sold for Rs 80 crores even before it goes on floors. Ajay Devgan’s recent film Singham was a blockbuster and given his popularity and SOS being a remake, it turning out to be a lucrative film for the buyers. Earlier there was a buzz that Ajay Devgan is keen on casting Tamannaah for the main role in the film; however, Sonakshi Sinha has been roped in. The film’s shooting is likely to start in January

Katrina Kaif may do an Item Number in Agneepath

As speculated Katrina Kaif may do an item number in Hrithik Roshan starrer Agneepath. After making the nation go crazy with 'Sheila Ki Jawaani' and recently grooving to the title track Bodyguard, news is that she will be seen doing an item number yet again; this time with Sanjay Dutt, who plays the bad man Kancha Cheena in Agneepath.

This will be the first time Katrina and Sanjay will be sharing screen space. Katrina is a fantastic dancer and Dutt being a non-dancer has decided to take two weeks off to rehearse his steps. He will also shave his head off for the third time for Agneepath.

The song is composed by National Award winning music directors Ajay and Atul Gogavale, who had composed the music of Singham.

The item number is going to be really sizzling. Reportedly, it is going to be on the lines of another Amitabh Bachchan chartbuster 'Jhuma Chooma De Dein' from Mukul Anand's Hum.

Now this is one song we are eagerly awaiting for.

Sachin, Sanju, Govinda, Boman, Akki and Ajay part of the Support My School telethon

A 12-hour live telethon on Sunday brought together several stars from the film industry as well as from the sports fields. Sanjay Dutt, Sachin Tendulkar, Boman Irani, Govinda and many others went out of their way to raise funds for the ‘Support My School’ campaign which was launched in January by NDTV, in partnership with Coca-Cola India, CAF and UN-Habitat. The campaign’s purpose is to create awareness on water and sanitation, environment and healthy, active living in Indian schools. To give just one example of one of the problems the endeavor hopes to erase is that in many schools, especially in rural areas, they don’t provide separate toilets for girls, which makes many girls back out from school so they remain uneducated. ‘Support My School’ wants to change that.
With Rs.500,000 per school, toilets for girls and facilities for drinking water, rainwater harvesting, and sports and games can be created. The fund raising target of the 12-hour telethon on NDTV had been Rs.5 crore for 100 schools. In the end, the target was even exceeded: Rs.7 crore will give 139 schools across the country a better life.
‘I think we have touched a chord that even 65 years after Independence, we haven’t been able to provide separate toilets for girl students in government schools. As a next step, we now pledge to visit each chief minister to urge them to provide in their next budgets Rs.50 crore to Rs.100 crore for creating basic infrastructure in government schools,’ said NDTV chief Pranoy Roy as he wound up the telethon.
‘It is important that the entire nation gets together for this initiative,’ cricket star Sachin Tendulkar said after NDTV anchor Vikram Chandra launched the telethon. During almost nine hours he gave many tips to Mumbai school students present in the studio and, in an interactive session via video, to children all over the country (‘Sachin ki Paathshala’); he showed his skills and even was the centre of the quiz ‘All about Sachin’ with school children which was hosted by NDTV sports editor Sonali Chander and actor Boman Irani (who, in a funny scene, caught Munnabhai Sanju trying to ‘cheat’ during the quiz). Sachin never grew tired of appealing for donations and made a contribution of Rs.500,000 each on behalf of his children Arjun and Sara.
Sanjay Dutt joined the telethon for several hours as a co-host, gave out jadoo ki jhappis to donors and helpers and even made a donation of Rs.10 lakh. The same amount was given each by Ajay Devgn and Akshay Kumar. Govinda enjoyed the public paying a dancing tribute to Shammi Kapoor. Even Gulshan Grover, Neha Dupia, Dia Mirza, Darsheel Safari, Shabeer Ahluwalia and many other stars, dancers and musicians joined the telethon which was telecast live on all NDTV channels until the news of the earth quake on the Sikkim-Nepal border came in on Sunday evening. Nevertheless, many small and big donations continued pouring in and in the end gave a result which will make many school children in India happy.

Sanjay Dutt's secret is out!

.

Sanjay Dutt
Everybody was amused when Sanjay Dutt and Ajay Devgn revealed that their portly director David Dhawan was caught buying bikinis in Bangkok where the team was shooting for their forthcoming comic caper, "Rascals".
Recently, at the film's music launch, the duo said with a wicked grin, "Once David went missing from the sets and we looked for him everywhere. After sometime we discovered that he went bikini shopping for the actresses."
But the good-humoured director had a bigger secret to reveal about his actor and close pal Sanjay Dutt who he lovingly calls Sanju. David and Sanjay have known each other for about 25 years now. He has directed Sanjay in about half a dozen films and he should know better. David revealed that during the initial years of his career when he began directing Sanjay's films, Sanjay would keep rejecting his heroine and would zero upon the fourth or the fifth one. Well, but what was Sanjay's criteria of finalising his heroine? David had no answer for that, or probably he didn't want to reveal that part fearing that he would irk the influential hero and good friend. And when somebody rightly asked David whether Kangana Ranaut was Sanjay's (the actor is also producing ""Rascals"") first choice or the fourth one for ""Rascals"", and David replied, ""I am talking about Sanjay like he was about two decades back.""
It doesn't matter much if David doesn't disclose more than this which he will never do, but one secret of the industry is certainly out. Whereas most heroes claim that they don't interfere in the selection of their heroines and leave it to the producer and director, it is certainly not true. And then, controversial s tories revolving around ""Rascal's"" female lead has been in circulation for a long time now. First we heard that Kangna created a fuss over donning a bikini for a particular scene in the film. Then there were stories about her 'special friendship' with Sanjay and Ajay, Then there was news of cracks in their relationship. Then came tales of her being shunned from the promotional campaigns of the film. And now there are stories of her refusing to dub the film unless paid an additional fee. And as the film's other producer Sanjay Ahluwalia was candid enough to admit that there were issues with Kangana which they were trying to sort out and that was the reason why she was missing from the music launch of the film.
Guess truth will never come out..

Have distributors begun to trust filmmakers again?

Thanks to the Bollywood boom film distributors have lapped up 'Krissh 3' and 'Son Of Sardar' for huge amounts even before the shoot begins

We all know that history repeats itself and here is a fine example of it from within the industry. Decades ago, films would be sold to distributors once announced or during mahurats.

Things changed after the industry was invaded by corporates, who would partner with producers and acquire the rights of the movies, anytime from the making to post completion.

While Rakesh Roshan has pocketed Rs 125 crore from selling Krissh 3
starring Hrithik Roshan, Ajay Devgn has got Rs 80 crore for Son Of Sardar

However now again, in a sort of reversal of trends, two films have been sold for a good amount, even before a single frame has been shot.

Trade sources reveal that while Rakesh Roshan has pocketed Rs 125 crore from selling his next Krissh franchisee, Ajay Devgn has secured R 80 crore for Son Of Sardar.

Veteran trade analyst Amod Mehra reasons, "Both the films topline major stars like Hrithik and Ajay, who are on a roll with Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Singham, respectively. So it's no surprise that their upcoming movies have been sold even before shooting has begun.

In a way, this marks the return of the trend of earlier days. Also, the market has grown, going by the money films have been earning recently." He adds that content is equally vital.

Sharing the same view is Sanjay Ghai, Delhi-based distributor at Mukta Arts. He feels that corporate houses are not picking up distribution rights as they did when they entered the industry.

"Corporates are more tight in terms of money. An individual distributor can dole out up to Rs 5 crore for a big movie in Punjab territory, but a corporate can't afford that risk.

Also, they wouldn't have been able to afford the price Krissh 3 was asking for," he points out, attributing the selling price to the set-up and the reputation of Rakesh and Hrithik jodi.

Coming to Son Of Sardar, Indore-based Aditya Choksey of Akshar Enterprises enthuses that Ajay is on a high. "Firstly, his films are doing multiple business. And the film is a remake of a South Indian hit. So naturally, Viacom 18 is positive about it," he points out.

Devgn's associate Kumar Mangat ascribes it to a combination of star status and the content. However, he states, "The trend of films being sold on announcement or mahurat is only for big stars like Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Ranbir Kapoor, etc. apart from Ajay and Hrithik."

As for movies like Aamir-Kareena's Dhuaan or Hrithik's Agneepath not sold as yet, it's because the producers don't want to rush, say trade sources. "You think Karan Johar can't get a good price for Agneepath? Or Aamir and his producers can't get the price they want?" counters Choskey.

A good year ahead
Meanwhile, Mumbai-based distributor Ramesh Sippy of Raksha Entertainemnt says, "This year has been much more successful than 2010 as yet. So naturally, the coming months promise to be as good if not better. That buoyancy has generated this heat," he states.

Also, Choskey feels that this trend is only partial. "The trend will return by 50 per cent. The remaining movies with other actors will have to wait. For me, the content is more important," he concludes. At the same time, Ghai feels that the individual distributors will also return in a considerable way.

Actors turning producers
Another distributor on condition of anonymity revealed that actor-producers venturing into distribution is another factor worth noting. "Dabangg got an offer of R 8 crore for Delhi-Up and Punjab.

But the Khans took the risk on themselves and the film did a business of R 25 crore," he reveals, adding that Aamir Khan, Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Rajkumar Hirani decided to distribute 3 Idiots themselves through Reliance Entertainment after the deal with Viacom 18 (then Studio 18) fell out.

Mere Brother Ki Dulhan Second Weekend Collection is 12 crore nett. Total Collection is 50 crore nett. HIT

Mere Brother Ki Dulhan has collected huge 12 crore nett all India in its second weekend. MBKD total collection now stands at 50 crore nett all India. It had benefited immensely from Mausam release delay. It also bothered the Bodyguard storm well. HIT.

Collection Breakup -

1st Week - 38.2 cr nett.
2nd Weekend - 12 cr nett (Early Estimate).

Total - 50.2 cr nett (Early Estimate).

Ra.One Business Model, Estimation, Collection and Predictions. How much collections Ra. One need to be a HIT?

Everybody is amazed at the rate Ra.One promotion is going on. It started with a teaser in Cricket World Cup and it is still continuing. Everybody knows Shahrukh Khan is a marketing acumen and he changed the whole definition again with Ra. One. Hope his geniuses helps Ra.One to become one of the biggest blockbusters ever.

Now lets come to the economics. Before all calculations it should be presumed that Ra.One will be liked by audiences immensely and is a well made film, since without this it is impossible for Ra.One even to recover its cost.

It is estimated that Ra.One budget is around 150-155 crore. 125 crore is the cost of the film and 25-30 crore is the cost of promotion and release. So, this means for it to be a trade HIT or profitable venture it had to recover 150-155 crore and after that profit will start. For Theatrical HIT it had to collect 150-155 crore distributer share Worldwide (3 Idiots Worldwide Distributor Share is 125-130 crore) through Theatres only, which looks difficult because of Budget of the film, but never say never.

Ra.One Movie Cost (Make + Promotion + Release) - 150-155 crore.

Amount already recovered -

1. Satelite Rights - 40 crores.
2. Music Rights - 7 crores (Estimated).

Amount needed to be recovered - 98-103 crores (Distributor Share from India and Overseas).

Now lets check the biggest all time HIT movies returns (Distributor Share Domestic Only)-

1. 3 Idiots - 99 crore.
2. Bodyguard - 85-88 crore (Expected).
3. Dabangg - 77 crore.
4. Ready - 65 crore.
5. Ghajini - 60 crore.

If we only take the Distributor Share of Top Movies of 2011 -

1. Bodyguard - 85-88 crore (Expected).
2. Ready - 65 crore.
3. Singham - 50 crore.

So, Ra.One if collects distributor share say as much as Bodyguard, which is still running, say around 80-90 crore, then it has only need to collect a distributor share of 10-20 crore from Overseas which is easily possible as Shahrukh Khan last released My Name is Khan collected around 35-40 crore distributor share.

How much potential of Ra.One -

Since, Shahrukh Khan is the King of Overseas at the moment and his last film MNIK has collected 35-40 crore distributor share, Ra.One should collect around 45-50 crore distributor share, if we take 20-25% hike from MNIK. Realistically it should cross 40 crore atleast.

In domestic market, Shahrukh Khan biggest HIT is Rab Ne Banaadi Jodi which distributor share was 45 crore. But it has released long back and market scenario is totally changed now. Today if a film is liked by audience immensely, we can safely assume a distribution share of 45-50 crore atleast. Bodyguard released on Eid 2011 went on to collect 78 crore distributor share from two weeks itself and still breaking records all India.

Ra.One Box Office Collection Prediction -

Domestic - 90 Max. 50 Min.
Overseas - 50 Max. 35 Min.
Note - We have already assumed Ra.One is a well made movie.

Amount might be recovered from Theatres (Estimation from)

Maximum - 140 (which is more than 3 Idiots 102).
Minimum - 85.

Addatoday Realistic figure - 70-80 distributor share (Domestic) and 40-50 distributor share (Overseas). That means 110-130 distributor share worldwide and it will make it HIT or Super HIT. Already taken that Ra.One is well made movie. It is just our prediction and criticism is welcomed. If God forbid and Ra.One comes with mixed Review it will set to entitle losses or may be heavy losses ever in Indian Box Office History. But lets be optimist and hope that Tsunami is awaiting this Diwali to shatter all Box Office Records.

It is to be noted that Huge Number or screens don't guarantee Box Office success, only Good Content. Aarakshan and Tees Maar Khan are good examples of release with huge screens but minimal returns.
